“Come in,” said the bearded man in an undertone, standing back and facing the unbolted doors with his pistol behind him. No one came in, the door remained closed. Five minutes afterwards when a second cabman pushed his head in cautiously, they were still waiting, and an anxious face peered out of the bar-parlour and supplied information.

“Are all the doors of the house shut?” asked Marvel. “He’s going round — prowling round. He’s as artful as the devil.”

“Good Lord!” said the burly barman. “There’s the back! Just watch them doors! I say — !” He looked about him helplessly. The bar-parlour door slammed and they heard the key turn.

“There’s the yard door and the private door. The yard door — ”

He rushed out of the bar (он бросился из трактира).

In a minute he reappeared with a carving-knife in his hand (через минуту он снова появился с ножом для разделки мяса в руке; to carve — /вы/резать; разделывать).

“The yard door was open (дверь во двор была открыта)!” he said, and his fat underlip dropped (сказал он, и его толстая нижняя губа отвисла).

He rushed out of the bar.

The man with the beard replaced his revolver (чернобородый убрал револьвер). As the barman entered the room (войдя в комнату) he saw Marvel, curiously crumpled up and struggling against the door (трактирщик увидел, что Марвел странным образом упал и борется перед дверью; to crumple up — комкать/ся/, сгибать/ся/; рухнуть) that led to the yard and kitchen (ведущей во двор и на кухню = через кухню во двор). There was a scream and a clatter of pans (раздался крик и грохот кастрюль; pan — сковорода, кастрюля). Marvel, head down, and lugging back obstinately (Марвел, нагнув голову, упрямо упирался; to lug —волочить, тянуть; сильно дергать; двигатьсярывками), was forced to the kitchen door (/но/ его дотащили до двери кухни /ведущей во двор/; to force — заставлять; с силой преодолевать сопротивление), and the bolts were drawn (и задвижки отодвинулись).

Then the policeman, who had been trying to pass the barman (полисмен, пытавшийся обойти трактирщика), rushed in, followed by one of the cabmen (вбежал в кухню, сопровождаемый одним из извозчиков), gripped the wrist of the invisible hand that collared Marvel (схватил запястье невидимой руки, державшей Марвела за воротник), was hit in the face and went reeling back (получил удар в лицо и отступил, шатаясь; to reel back — покачнуться, пошатнуться /от удара, потрясения и т.п./). The door opened, and Marvel made a frantic effort to obtain a lodgment behind it (дверь открылась, и Марвел сделал отчаянную попытку спрятаться за ней; to obtain — получать, приобретать; lodgment — жилище, приют; to make a lodgement — закрепиться, обосноваться на позиции). Then the cabman collared something (затем извозчик что-то = кого-то схватил за шиворот).
